SQL Server Editions

There are many SQL Server editions that focus on specific requirements such as SQL Server BI stack. Let’s take a quick look at the available versions.

  • Express: This version of SQL Server is available for free. If you are starting with SQL Server it’s a good option to start with. It has almost all the core functionalities provided by SQL Server. The maximum database size available with this is 10 MB.
  • Developer: This version contains all services provided by SQL Server but only allowed to use in development and test environment. Use in production of this edition is not allowed.
  • Enterprise: This edition is same as Developer edition but can be used in production environments. It is a perfect fit for highly scale able application and available in two flavors of on-premise and cloud.
  • Web: This version is focused on web applications hence the name of edition is Web. Though, Express edition also can be used in web applications but this version provide extra benefits on top of Express edition in case of web apps.
  • Standard: This version is common among production environments. It has almost all features requirement by organisations. But it lacks some high-end features that are available in Enterprise edition.
  • Business Intelligence: As the name of the edition describes this edition is focused on BI stack. This edition enable us to Integrate and Analyse data. And then build reports of that data to represent data as useful information.
